Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree

Daffodils

Spring has sprung here in the Central Valley. Many beautiful flowers have blossomed and the trees are in full bloom. Each year as the fruit and nut trees begin to blossom it reminds me of a song that either my brother Nebur or my brother Aaron used to come home singing. We call it the Popcorn Song.

Today , as Sabina and I were driving around town we saw many Popcorn trees and broke out into song. Here it is:

More Trees

The Popcorn Song

I looked out the window, and what did I see?
Popcorn popping on the apricot tree!
Spring has brought me such a nice surprise,
Blossoms popping right before my eyes.
I could take an armful and make a treat,
A popcorn ball that would smell so sweet.
It wasn't really so, but it seemed to be,
Popcorn popping on the apricot tree.

What a treat to be reminded of that song. Grandmother used to teach it to her kindergarteners and that's how I learned it. I do miss those popcorn trees in February! This season reminds me so much of my love for the book Secret Garden as a child. The image of unlocking the gate to the secret garden and watching spring transform twisted twigs into colorful blossoms is powerful.
