On Saturday a friend of mine found out that I am leaving for Panama on Friday. She ran to find her purse and came back and handed me a dollar bill. I asked her what the dollar was for. (I was trying to figure out what she wanted me to buy her for $1!) She then explained that as soon as I arrive in Panama, I need to give the dollar to the first poor person I see. It is a mitzvah (a good deed) and it is a way to ensure my safe arrival in Panama. If I have a mission (giving the money to someone needy) ...I need to be able to get there to fulfill it.
I have never heard of this before. It was a very sweet gesture.
