Testing Question

In my last post regarding testing, Julissa asked my opinion on what should be done about students that are below grade level or that are English Learners with regard to testing.

What are your thoughts on this subject? What do you think about testing in general? If you were in charge, how would you change out testing system?

My opinion is that testing should be instructive to the teacher. By the time I get the results of the state tests, I'll never teach those children again because they've gone on to the next grade. Give me tests that teach me what the children know and don't know, what they can do and can't do. Give me time to administer tests 1-1, and time to analyze them. Without practical diagnosis and prescription, tests are useless to me as a teacher. Oh, I could go on and on...... Teragram

Intersting ideas from Tregram and Kelly. I can imagine that there a lot of teaching professionals with similar/additional ideas. My pet peeve is why should a government official with no teaching experience dictate the rules for schools. Shouldn't it come from the very teachers that are with the students day in and day out?
